Steroids play an important role in treatment of multiple myeloma and have both anti-inflammatory and anti-myeloma effects. Prednisone and dexamethasone are the two used most frequently, and they help reduce the side effects of nausea and vomiting that accompany chemotherapy and other forms of treatment.
Steroids are not without their side effects. They can result in high blood sugar, weight gain, problems sleeping, and a change in mood. Over time, they can suppress the immune system and weaken bones. These problems usually go away after patients stop taking these drugs.
