Team Captain, Ashley Hafdal, first came across the MMRF in 2015 when she searched for a walk in Twin Cities for Multiple Myeloma. She chose to participate in the MMRF Twin Cities 5K because she knew how much it meant to her mom, Sheridan Hafdal. Sheridan was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September of 2011, Ashley’s senior year of high school, and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2012.

“My mom never asks for anything so it’s the least we can do for her and to support her through this journey” says Ashley

The team name “Sher’s Fab Fighters” represents the Hafdal’ s family and friends spirit of togetherness, Ashley’s mom doesn’t and won’t fight alone. A lot of Ashley’s family and friends participate in the race and it is something the team looks forward to as a family. It’s a great time for everyone to be together and to be raising money for a great cause. This is the team’s 3rd year participating and they hope to make this event a tradition.

Ashley has found strength in her family’s commitment to staying positive even when life gives them reasons to be negative. She views everyday as a new day. As a family, the Hafdals never know what type of day their mom, Sheridan is going to have. Ashley says this is the hardest part, seeing her mom in pain. Sheridan’s family stand by her side and are her rock through the good and the hard times. Her husband Rich is a huge support system to not only Sheridan but also to their daughter and son. The Hafdal family feels that the Spirit of Hope Award is a truly wonderful honor and is very humbled to receive this award. Ashley believes the least we can do in life is to support our love ones around us fighting any type of battle and that support is a huge healing mechanism.

Ashley adds,

“At the end of the day we know we have each other and always will. We truly need to be grateful for the good times and keep the faith during the hard times”

The MMRF works tirelessly to find a cure to extend the lives of patients, just like Sheridan Hafdal and is proud to honor Sher’s Fab Fighters as the 2017 recipient of the MMRF Spirit of Hope Award. This award is given at every MMRF 5K Walk/Run event to a person or team who inspires hope and shows extraordinary commitment to the MMRF. Sher’s Fab Fighters have touched the myeloma community with their strength of character, their kindness, and their embodiment of hope.
