The North Texas Myeloma Support Group

Posted April 2017

The North Texas Myeloma Support Group was founded in 1996 with the goal to create and share hope with myeloma patients, caregivers, family and friends through education, support, and their personal experiences. They have about 200 members on their mailing list, with 30-50 attending meetings at Baylor Sammons Center the 2nd Saturday of the month from 10 – 1. Group members have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and update each other on their conditions and treatments. The group discusses new trials that many members are participating in and new information concerning research being done by the MMRF, the IMF, LLS and the local medical centers. The North Texas group participates in local 5k races, fundraisers, webinars and more. A monthly newsletter is sent out after each meeting to members with minutes and upcoming events.

“It’s been a godsend for support, education and encouragement.” -Patrick Beal a member of the North Texas Myeloma Support Group

The North Texas Myeloma Support Group is for myeloma patients and their spouses, caregivers, loved ones, significant others, family members and friends. Diagnosed in 2002, Patrick Beal sought out as many resources as he could find for information and support. Patrick’s support system, his husband Mike Rodriguez, family and friends remind him of the value of each day and the relationships that are a part of each one. Patrick has found strength in his involvement with the North Texas Support group. Specifically, that of the late founder of the support group, Peter Tischler. Peter was an early pioneer in the idea of an informed myeloma patient and being one’s own best advocate in the healthcare arena.

“Peter organized and did so much for our group– including those around the world through his posts –that it took 5 members to replace him after his untimely passing. His wife, Lucy, was also an integral part of not just his life and family, but also of the North Texas Myeloma Support Group as well.” – Patrick Beal
