2016 Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek

“Everything begins with an idea.” – Earl Nightengale

One year ago, Jamie Slater, of Brooklyn, New York, came to the MMRF with an idea of climbing the tallest free-standing mountain in the world – Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Jamie, a kick-boxing and adventure enthusiast, had been pushing around the thought of conquering Mt. Kilimanjaro for some time, but as she explains, “I wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but didn’t want to do it for me, I wanted to do it for a reason much bigger than me.”

Slater shared the idea with colleague Stan Wagner, a multiple myeloma patient, and now fellow team member. Jamie shares, “[Stan] taught me about what having multiple myeloma means, inspired me and connected me with the wonderful people at the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.”

Jamie’s idea flourished and together the MMRF’s Endurance Events program staff and Jamie fielded a team of 15 inspired and dedicated individuals, including four myeloma patients! Slater’s profound business savvy led to another tremendous development when she connected the MMRF with CURE Magazine, the largest oncology publication, led by Marty Murphy. The two discussed the potential of this endeavor, and from those initial discussions was born an amazing opportunity with CURE, Takeda Oncology, and the MMRF. Thanks to Jamie’s initiative, Takeda Oncology is now underwriting the entire Mt. Kilimanjaro trek and thus developed an entirely new sector of the MMRF’s Endurance Events program: Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma.

On January 15th the Mt. Kilimanjaro team begins their journey to Tanzania where they will summit the mountain carrying with them a banner, designed by Jamie herself (a talented graphic designer). The banner will bear the names of hundreds of myeloma patients the team is climbing in honor of. Stay connected here and track Jamie and the team over their 8 day trek.

This audacious idea has flourished into an expanding program, now with three adventure hiking opportunities for patients and their families to prove that they are ‘LIVING PROOF’ that the MMRF is extending and improving the lives of individuals living with myeloma and that cancer will not stop you from reaching your most adventurous goals!
