The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation is delighted to recognize Deanna Siegfried as the 2013 MMRF Race for Research: Washington, D.C. 5K Walk/Run Spirit of Hope honoree. Deanna’s mom, Evelyne, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma seven years ago and has faced many tough challenges during her courageous battle.
From day one, Evelyne decided this diagnosis was not going to define her. Evelyne has always wanted to be seen for who she is and the qualities she possesses, not the disease she has. After her Autologous Stem Cell Transplant on January 3, 2011, being discreet became more of a challenge when Evelyne began to lose her hair after three cycles of combination high-dose chemotherapy. Deanna recalled, “I have never, in my life, seen a more beautiful bald woman than my mom.”
Since then, Evelyne’s hair has grown back and the scarves have been put away, but her battle with the disease wages on. “Nothing is harder than having someone you love diagnosed with a disease, especially one that is incurable.” Deanna said. “The rollercoaster of emotions, test results that give you hope, lows that crush your morale when a treatment stops working or the disease becomes resilient — my family is all too familiar with this rollercoaster and it is one that no one should have to ride.”
Throughout this journey, Deanna has been a rock for her mom and entire family. Deanna accompanies her mom on her many hospital visits and administers various medications. Deanna provides Evelyne with so much support and love during very difficult periods throughout her battle and will not stop keeping hope alive.
This past summer, Deanna decided to run the MMRF Race for Research: Washington, D.C. 5K. Originally, Deanna was just going to do the race on her own. Then her personal trainer, Beth, said she was going to race alongside her every step of the way. Next, Deanna’s dad proclaimed he would not miss this event for anything. Then, Deanna’s brother, Daniel, and expecting sister-in-law, Samantha, signed up with their son Ayden. Just last week, Daniel and Samantha welcomed a new baby girl, Skylar “Strudellette” Siegfried into the world, who will also be in attendance! They all joined together to form “The Myeloma Mashers” team.
“I needed to do something to help the MMRF find a cure for this terrible disease,” Deanna shared. “When I received an MMRF Race for Research “Save The Date” card in the mail, I knew this was the perfect way I could make a difference.”
This is the team’s first year participating, captained by Deanna, and they have taken the race by storm. Deanna has raised her fundraising goal three times over the last month. She shattered her original goal of $10,000 and is now on her way to raising an amazing $25,000 for the MMRF! Deanna is striving to be the Top Individual Fundraiser on November 16th.
“I really want to do as much as I can to raise money for the MMRF,” Deanna said. “My mom is sick of being sick! ENOUGH with chemo treatment rooms, ENOUGH with painful side effects, ENOUGH with multiple myeloma! We need a cure!”
