Bob’s Story:

Posted: June, 2012

A self described ‘bicycle touring nut,’ Tacoma resident Bob Stidwell has logged thousands of miles throughout the western United States and Canada since 1953. When his beloved wife Patricia was stricken with multiple myeloma in 2007, Bob put his bike and helmet in the garage for four years so he could care for her at home. As Patricia’s illness progressed, he often dreamed of doing something meaningful to honor his wife. Last summer, when Patricia lost her battle with myeloma, Bob decided to fulfill the dream. He hatched a plan that would combine his lifetime loves to make a difference.

At 80 years old, Bob dusted off his bike, donned his helmet, and began the first of a dozen cycles to various Albertsons grocery stores each Saturday this summer to collect funds to find a cure for the disease that took his wife’s life. At each store, Bob logs donations along with his miles, setting up information sites and requesting contributions from customers. A former classroom teacher with 32 years of service in the Tacoma School District, Bob has worked part time since his retirement in 1992 as a courtesy clerk at Albertsons. He enjoys interacting with the public through his job and figured this would serve him well as an advocate and fundraiser for the MMRF.

Some of the stores are as far as 25 miles away. Bob is grateful to his employer for their support, and to add a little excitement, he is having a contest to see which of the stores will raise the most money. As of June 2012, with only two store visits under his belt, he has already raised over $1200 and plans to continue until he raises more than $10,000.

“At 80 years of age, I am fortunate to be in good health and able and motivated to fulfill my dreams. I am determined to do everything I can to raise critical research funds to find successful treatments and ultimately an end to this disease.”
