Becky Alday was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015 following her son’s high school graduation. She began weekly chemo treatments and blood transfusions. It soon became apparent that her kidneys were not functioning as they should and she was put on a bone strengthener. She underwent a stem cell transplant in May 2016 which unfortunately did not work. Becky’s second transplant was in June 2017 with her son Johnny’s stem cells. In September 2017 Becky received the best text from her doctor, Dr. Brian Berryman. Her transplant was successful and showed complete remission.

“I owe my life to Johnny – his stem cells saved my life. And I feel great!” – Becky Alday.

Becky’s journey has been challenging and has tested her in ways she never imagined. Despite these obstacles she has remained positive. Becky credits this to her catholic upbringing and the power of prayer. She has found strength in her family and friend’s unconditional support and prayers. She is determined to continue living her life as she did prior to her diagnosis.

“My family and friends have remained positive and as I’ve always thought, quitting is not an option. Multiple myeloma may be here however I’m a fighter. Nothing can or will knock me down…” said Becky.

Becky’s husband John and her children Johnny and Karen has been by her side every step of the way. Becky believes having her family fight alongside her is the best medicine. Becky found the MMRF and its resources through her husband John. Through the MMRF she connected with other myeloma patients. Becky says hearing other myeloma patient’s stories isn’t just inspiring but a life line for her.

After finding the MMRF, the Alday’s joined the MMRF Dallas 5K. In 2016, John formed the family’s team Alday Everyday. Last year, over 40 family and friends came out to the 5K raising over $20,000. This is the team’s 3rd year participating and they look forward to a great day. She feels very honored and blessed to receive the Spirit of Hope Award.

The MMRF works tirelessly to find a cure to extend the lives of patients, and is proud to honor Becky Alday as the 2018 recipient of the MMRF Spirit of Hope Award. Becky has touched the myeloma community with her strength of character, her kindness, and her embodiment of hope.
