Alex Burke started participating in the MMRF Team for Cures 5K Walk/Run Program in 2008 when her neighbor alerted her that there was a race in New Canaan. In 2008, Team Darien was formed which included Alex’s family, friends and their Darien community. Over the past eight years, the team has had various names and captains. Over the past six years, they have been Team Darien to represent their town. All are welcome to join from Darien who are in anyway related to multiple myeloma or wants to support. Over the past three years, Team Darien t-shirts have the slogan “Walk, Jog, Run, Sprint, Cure”. With this slogan, they encourage anyone to attend and participate in the race whether they are competing or walking.
When Alex was 11, her mother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. At that age, the answer for Alex was that she needed to find a cure herself. She quickly realized, it wasn’t that simple. However, the next best thing was a few months later when they discovered the MMRF. As years went by, attending the race and facing this disease annually was her small way of helping find a cure. Alex believes that this race has helped her reach a level of acceptance and it means so much to receive this award.

Alex Burke is a truly inspiring young woman who just finished her freshman year in college. The MMRF has been so honored to have Alex intern the past few summers with the MMRF. During her internship, she had the great opportunity to truly understand the hard work within the organization to find a cure. Alex worked right next to the employees fundraising and researching to find a cure for multiple myeloma. The MMRF was honored to watch Alex develop as a young professional who worked hard and met all of her goals
“My mom loves Winston Churchill’s saying, “never, ever, ever give up”. I think that whenever I face anything tough, I keep this saying in mind. Even when it feels like I’ve hit rock bottom, I think of how lucky I am to still have my mom. She went to my high school graduation a year ago and just watched my sister graduate college.”
“For anyone whose loved one is facing multiple myeloma, I would say it’s hard to hear the news at first and, after eight years it doesn’t necessarily get easier. However, in the darkest of times, you will find the support of family, friends, and strangers to help make each day a little easier.”
The MMRF works tirelessly to find a cure to extend the lives of patients just like Alex’s mother, and is proud to honor Alex Burke as the 2015 recipient of the MMRF Spirit of Hope Award, given at every MMRF 5K Walk/Run event to a person who inspires hope and shows extraordinary commitment to the MMRF. Alex has touched the myeloma community with her strength of character, her kindness, and her embodiment of hope.
