In the Spotlight
Meet Kent Wells
Kent Wells, Vice President of Federal Relations at AT&T, is a multiple myeloma patient and a much appreciated supporter of the MMRF.
Diagnosed in 2007, Kent started treatment in May of 2008 and is currently feeling well on combination therapy. Eager to support the acceleration of future treatments and extend lives for all myeloma patients, a group of Kent’s friends led by Laura Rizzo, Robert Fisher and Brad Edwards created the Charity Golf Classic in 2009 in Kent’s honor.
Held each spring on a Monday at the Woodmore Country Club in Mitchellville, MD, the Charity Golf Classic attracts 70 to 80 attendees for a day that combines competition and camaraderie with the cause. This popular annual golf tournament has expanded to include a complementary tennis tournament in partnership with fellow multiple myeloma patient and friend Tim Johnson, Press Secretary for Congressman Bachus. Tim, an avid tennis player, engages an additional 15 to 20 participants with this second event. Then to truly maximize the opportunity for everyone in their community to support the cause in whatever way they can, the group also hosts a Tuesday night cocktail reception in Washington DC, often attended by notable members of Congress.
In addition, Kent and his wife Debbie have led a team at the MMRF Race for Research: Washington DC 5K Walk/Run in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Kent and his supporters have collectively raised more than $300,000 to date to support the MMRF.
This year’s Charity Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 21. To get involved, please email: email@example.com.
