Tracy Safron’s Story:

Posted: August, 2012

2012 marks the second year “Team Tracy” will be participating in the Ann Landers MMRF Race for Research: Chicago 5K Walk/Run. Team captain Tracy Safron was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in December 2010, and had a stem cell transplant in July 2011, just months before last year’s event. This year, Tracy is looking forward to creating race traditions with her team and family.

Tracy became familiar with the MMRF almost immediately upon diagnosis, and looked for ways to get involved as it was important for her family to support other families and fund research to lead to a cure. “While I was in the hospital I mentioned to my dad, Mitchell Morris, that I thought the MMRF had a walk in Chicago in the fall, and we both got excited,” Tracy said. “We chose to participate because of the connection it gave us to the MMRF in supporting its urgent mission, building awareness of multiple myeloma, and helping other families.”

Tracy feels honored to receive the MMRF Spirit of Hope award as it reinforces her mission to stay positive and strong not only for herself, but as an example to others, “I come from a very strong-willed family, and I am putting what I learned from my family to good use.” Many years ago her husband, Jeffrey, taught her to take one day at a time, which she feels is the best advice, as she always strives to be the best person she can be day-by-day. “Once I got over the shock of my diagnosis, I knew I would do whatever I could to fight this disease courageously.”

Over the past two years, Tracy has met challenges with her chemotherapy, including developing shingles and having a cornea transplant, but through it all she realized how much friends, family, and doctors mean to helping her fight. She is excited to share the day with the greater Chicago myeloma community and create traditions for Team Tracy.
