Meet James Crowell
Updated: May, 2012
James Crowell is an MBA graduate of the Johnson School at Cornell University. He grew up in Starkville, Mississipi, where his parents, Lorenzo and Marianne, continue to live today. Lorenzo is a multiple myeloma patient who has had two autologous transplants, one in 2002 and another in 2004. The second transplant involved harvesting the natural killer cells from James' sister Ruth. Lorenzo's disease is in stable condition. He is being treated with Revlimid, Cytoxin, Dexamethasone, and Velcade.
The original Crawfish event was created in 2003 at Williams College in Massachusetts by James and his classmates as a way to share a cultural Southern tradition with the school. In 2009, James and fellow alums Peter Vecchio, Michael Graham and Scott Johnson and many other friends officially organized Crawfish for Cancer, Inc. in New York City. Their signature event is built on the Crawfish event from Williams which they transformed into a fundraiser to benefit cancer research. The MMRF has benefited from their work for the past four years. Crawfish for Cancer’s Annual Crawfish Boil event caters to other young professionals with the goal of engaging a new generation of philanthropists and raising awareness. Hundreds of pounds of Louisiana crawfish are served along with beer, wine and signature cocktails, with live music throughout the day. The fifth annual Crawfish was held on Saturday, May 19 on a gorgeous day in NYC. Over 700 people attended and spent the day eating crawfish and listening to great jazz bands.
In addition to the Annual Crawfish Boil, the Crawfish for Cancer crew organizes other regular fundraising events to benefit the MMRF, including annual holiday parties and themed social events such as an October 2010 bar crawl when all attendees dressed in their best tennis whites to coincide with the U.S. Open. “I’m so fortunate to have so much help from all of my friends to organize these great events that support the MMRF’s important work and a cause that is so important to my family,” said James.
This year they plan to expand their event to DC on April 12, 2013 and Boston on June 8, 2013. Crawfish for Cancer has donated $71,000 to the MMRF since 2009.
