Meet Kendra Goffredo and David Robles

Triathlon and Cycling Events
Ironman NY

Their Story:

Posted: August, 2012

Kendra Goffredo and her brother-in-law David Robles set out to race three full-length Ironman triathlons and are currently two thirds of the way there. With both the 2011 Ironman Arizona and the 2012 Ironman St. George already under their belts, David and Kendra will take on Ironman NY on August 11, 2012. They hope to raise $30,000 for the MMRF. All of this is to honor Kendra’s father, Tony Goffredo, who is beating the odds against multiple myeloma.

“Poppy Tony” was once a competitive cyclist and marathon runner, and though he eventually traded in racing for time with his daughters, he has always encouraged Kendra to reach her athletic potential. When he was first diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2003, Tony and Kendra decided it was time to accomplish their long-standing goal of running a marathon together. Despite unrelenting fatigue for Tony caused by the disease, they trained and, incredibly, both qualified for Boston in what would become Tony's last marathon. Though that qualifier proved to be Tony’s last race, he continues to uphold his principle of never quitting. This year he begins his tenth year of living with multiple myeloma.

Meanwhile Kendra continues to make her father proud by pushing herself to cover increasingly challenging distances, including the 140.6 miles of the Ironman NY. “As my father defies the odds, outliving the stark five-year prognosis he faced when diagnosed with multiple myeloma ten years ago, he shows me the power of perseverance. Competing in the Ironman U.S. Championship allows me to race with gratitude for the lessons in perseverance that my father continues to teach me,” said Kendra. Over the years Kendra has participated in several MMRF PowerTeam endurance events.

Tony’s son-in-law and Kendra’s brother-in-law David is a dual champion of myeloma research, not only as a supporter of the MMRF but as an employee at Onyx Pharmaceuticals, which recently announced the FDA approval of Kyprolis (carfilzomib), a critical and much needed new treatment for patients with multiple myeloma. This myeloma milestone was achieved expeditiously in partnership with the MMRF through such collaborations as MMRC clinical trials and the C-MAP expanded access program. “Just as in my profession, where I work to advance the cure for multiple myeloma, I race with that same purpose. My father-in-law is my inspiration,” said David.

For the first time ever, Ironman is making a very limited number of guaranteed entries available to a select few charities. The MMRF is offering spots at the following 2013 Ironman races: Ironman Lake Placid, Ironman NY, Ironman Florida and Timberman Ironman 70.3.
