Week #7 – Motivation
My Master's Degree is in Exercise Science with a concentration in Sport Psychology. I wanted the psychological training as well because, after working with hundreds of clients over the years, I needed to know how to motivate each one. I'll never forget the words of one of my professors, however, when we were discussing this very topic. He stated very matter-of-factly "You cannot motivate someone. You can merely provide incentives."
All triathletes have their own personal reasons for wanting to complete the race. You each have your own individual reasons but you also share one incredible common bond: You are doing it for more than just yourself. You are doing it for a cause, for a purpose greater than just your own; you are pushing your limits to help make someone else's life better. That is an amazingly powerful incentive.
When the last thing you want to do is go out for that early morning workout, when you are dragging during the final miles of your long ride or run and just want to pack it in, when you're not sure you can continue with your training, remember what you are training for.
Never forget how fortunate you are just to be able to lace up your shoes and go out to exercise. Every day is a gift.
